Last Thursday (30 April), Thwaite Botanic Gardens hosted 50 pre-school children who took part in the launch of the Early Years Daily Mile in Hull.

Hosted by London Marathon Events, in partnership with Hull City Council’s Healthy Lifestyles Team and the University of Hull, the event brought together children from St Nicholas School, Bright Beginnings Nurseries and Butterflies Nursery to encourage enjoyment in physical activity.

Alongside the participants, six university students and trainee practitioners joined the day, linking their recent learning around physical activity and early development with real-life practice.

The day combined short practitioner training, led by the London Marathon Foundation, with plenty of fun, active sessions for the children. Activities included a TCS Mini London Marathon-themed run, a Peppa Pig trail and creative play like mud painting.

The event finished with a celebration and certificate presentation, recognising everyone’s involvement.

There are plans for the launch to become an annual event, helping more young children get active while supporting future early years practitioners with hands-on experience and training.
